As a Peace Keeper

UNPF (United Nation Police Force) did mission named International Police Task Force (IPTF) in Bosnia & Hercegovina in ’94 to ’98, This Mission was to secure bosnian people after ethnic war during the fall of Yugoslavia, and to rebuild police institution which free of racism. Bosnia Hercegovina is the new nation which previously is the one of Yugoslavia ‘s state. There 5 new nations are held after fall of Yugoslavia : Slovenia, Croatia, Serbia, Bosnia & Hercegovina and Montenegro. IPTF were consist of more than 20 countries who send their best policemen to join this mission. The ’97 contingent of Indonesian National Police officers were 18 (the time length of 1 contingent is a year and could be extended if needs, if mission not accomplish yet there will be a replacement), the number of INP to be tested for this mission were 200, and I was the one who was lucky to get this opportunities, we started our mission in July ’97 and finished in Oct ’98, so we got mission for 1 year and 3 months. During this mission I deployed to Mostar Police Station, as an Administration Officer. Mostar is in the southern of B&H, is around 250 km from Sarajevo the capital city of B&H, and the place of IPTF Head Quarter. (if we look at the map Sarajevo is the middle of B&H). Mostar is great city and has a famous icon “Bridge of Mostar” (build by Ottoman Empire in 16 centuries). While I was there, this bridge had under contruction, this bridge was destroyed because this bridge is connected the east and west part of Mostar, during the war citizen of mostar had divided by two entities base of ethnic and separated by Mostar River , on the west bank is for Croatian people and east bank is for Bosnian (the main task of IPTF in Mostar is to minimize the diversity between them). Last month i saw TV program in Discovery tour and travel about Mostar Bridge, The Bridge is finished to rebuild and west and east river bank people of Mostar is reunited, every body smiling the are no more hate between them… I’m very glad to know that… I wish someday I would go to Mostar to remembering my best ever duties and see a new Bridge of Mostar.

In The Academy

I started to be a cadet of Police Academy or Akademi Kepolisian /Akpol In ’89, but Before that I had to accomplish basic training for three months in Academy of Arm Forces in Magelang, Jawa Tengah .

We had fully military training, therefore we trained shooting, raid tactic, cross country, jungle survival … etc.

Indonesian Police Academy placed in Candi, outskirt of Semarang, Jawa Tengah, for those who become cadet have to take 3 years studied time, and year as studied officer.

During 3 years, each years named as : 1st year as Corporal Cadet, 2nd year as Sergeant Cadet, 3rd year as Major Sergeant Cadet, and 1 years as a studied officer.

We were have very tight daily schedule : beginning at 4 am for morning sports, morning roll call at 7 am, breakfast, class or outdoor activities until 1 PM, After class roll call, Lunch, Afternoon Activities, night roll call at 9 pm… and same schedule tomorrow, we only have the day off in the weekend.

Being as a cadet is very proudful, every time we spend a weekend and go to downtown, every single girls eye were look to us (gee!).

If you ever see the old movie: Officer and Gentleman, that is look exactly as picture of us.

Akpol started accepting women as Cadet in the years ’02, in my cadet’s time, all men.

The Recruitment

I had Passed my Senior High School in ’89, so That time i so badly think about my future…. I was thinking maybe i would have studied in the best university in Indonesia, so I might be easy to find a job, and then i tried to get scholarship from government, a fter that i would directly has a job ….
I tried those opportunities, I chose to tested for math and science faculty in The University of Indonesia, this is one of the best University in Indonesia and for services college i tried to have a test in Arm Forces Academy (before Police are under supervision of Arm Forces). The recruitment system for academy of arm forces was different, in that time we didn’t know which academy we would joint if we pass the test (academy of Naval, Air force, Military and Police, this system has change when Police separated from arm forces supervisory in ’01) and the truth is: we all had obsession to joint military academy, because to be an army is a beginning of bright future, that was usual because that time our nation lead by Soeharto. Military had entered and influencing most political venue, as a political leader and as bureaucrats.
So I pass those test all…
I got my Math and Science Faculty in University of Indonesia, and also Police Academy (I was little upset because being as army more interested).
Finally I have chosen the services college in Police Academy, i though being a policeman is a better choice because my parents won’t pay anything until my graduation, and the best is: I could directly has my own job….
